What is aluminum wiring, and why does it need to be repaired?

You may have discovered your home’s aluminum wiring during a home inspection or while doing some DIY repairs.

While homes are typically wired with copper, the copper shortage in the 1960s and early 1970s caused the price to skyrocket. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, homes built in that time were often wired with aluminum, a cheaper alternative.

But aluminum is not as durable as copper. It is more likely to corrode or create hotspots.

Plus, our growing dependence on electronics has greatly increased the electrical load on our homes, which aluminum cannot always handle safely.

The most likely problem spots in your home’s wiring are at the connection points (such as outlets and light switches). Many of today’s wiring devices are not rated for aluminum wire.

Unlike copper, aluminum can overheat at these connections, creating electrical hazards behind your walls.

Without aluminum wiring repair, you may not be able to sell your home or get it fully insured.

Using aluminum wiring for most connections does not meet the safety code in the state of Florida. If an accident were to happen due to aluminum wiring, some insurers may label it a result of “policyholder negligence” and refuse to cover the damage.

But that does not mean you are stuck with a home you can’t sell or insure.

Homeowners can choose between three approved methods for repairing aluminum wiring in their homes.

1. Rewire the entire home with copper wire. This solution eliminates the issue, but it is both time-consuming and cost-prohibitive for most homeowners.

2. Repair the aluminum wire with Copalum connectors. This method is cheaper than replacing all of the aluminum wiring. But these connections can only be installed by certified Copalum technicians, who may not be available in your area.

3. Remediate the wiring with aluminum-copper (Al/Cu) connectors. The most cost-effective of the approved methods, this process can be completed by any qualified electrician. While it can be completed by the homeowner, using a professional for the remediation ensures the process is safe, permanent, and accepted by your insurer.

Our electricians at Taddeo Electric are trained in using Al/Cu connectors to repair aluminum wiring.

This time- and money-saving process is approved by the Consumer Product Safety Commission. When done correctly, the installation of Al/Cu connectors will bring your home up to code.
