An ounce of prevention is worth everything to keep your loved ones safe. Now is the time to ensure your home’s smoke alarms are up-to-date and placed correctly. The NFPA recommends replacing alarm units every 10 years. Call Taddeo Electric today if your home needs a smoke detector update.
How do you know if your smoke alarm system needs to be updated?
A working smoke detector allows you to act quickly in an emergency—whether to quickly evacuate your loved ones or simply rescue dinner from the oven.
The NFPA recommends testing your smoke alarms once a month. Do you know what to look for when you do this routine check-up?
Ensure your smoke detectors will work when you need them most with these five essential tips:
Keep your smoke detectors up-to-date. Alarm sensors can wear out, so each unit should be replaced every ten years. If your detector does not have a label with the manufacture date, it needs to be replaced.
Ensure your smoke detectors are free of dust and cobwebs. They can interfere with the device’s ability to detect smoke.
Conduct a quick sound check once a month. For most devices, simply press and hold the test button until the alarm goes off. If the noise is muffled or weak, it is time to replace the device. Press the button again to turn off the alarm.
Know the signs that a smoke alarm needs a new battery or to be replaced. These signs include a constant beeping when there is no smoke, frequent exposure to smoke that can wear out the sensor, and no response after the test button has been pressed for several seconds.
Place smoke detectors in recommended locations. According to the NFPA, these devices should be placed inside each bedroom, outside sleeping areas, and on every level of the home.
